- I am working on a software project that is supposed to operate
- with a wide range of modem brands, and I am asking for your help
- in gathering as much data about different modems as possible,
- and some information about the conventions of your local
- telephone company and in your country.
-
- If you would like to help, please fill out the questionnaire
- below and send it back to me by e-mail (to "kruse@america.com").
- Please put the words "modem query" in the Subject header of your mail.
-
- To reduce the traffic in this newsgroup please DO NOT "follow-up"
- to this article.
-
- Your help is very much appreciated. All information will be treated
- confidentially, and will be evaluated without any reference to the
- sender's name or email address.
-
-
- A-1. What is the complete name of your modem (incl. manufacturer
- name), e.g. "USR Courier V.34" or "SupraFAXmodem V.32bis" ?
-
- _____________________________________________
-
-
- A-2. What is the maximum phone line speed your modem supports,
- 14400 bps, 28800 bps, 33600 bps etc. ?
-
- ____________________
-
-
- A-3. What is the maximum RS-232 line speed (modem<->computer) that
- your modem supports, e.g. 19200 bps, 57600 bps, 115200 bps etc. ?
-
- ____________________
-
-
- A-4. What is the initialization string required to set your modem
- to factory default settings for an IBM-PC compatible machine
- in high-speed mode, i.e. with protocols (V.42 etc.) enabled,
- e.g. "AT&F" or "AT&F2" ?
-
- ____________________
-
-
- A-5. Does the above initialization string enable the setting
- "Carrier Detect line follows carrier", i.e. NOT "Carrier
- Detect is always on" ? If your modem needs an additional
- command string to enable "Carrier Detect line follows
- Carrier", please specify it here, e.g. "AT&C1".
-
- ____________________
-
-
- A-6. Does the above initialization string *enable* RTS/CTS (hardware,
- 7-wire) flow control, and *disable* Xon/Xoff (software) flow
- control ? If not, please specify the additional command string
- for these settings, e.g. "AT&K3" or "AT&H1&I0&R2".
-
- ____________________
-
-
- A-7. Does the above initialization string cause your modem to *ignore*
- the state of the DTR (Data Terminal Ready) line ? If not, please
- specify the additional command string for that, e.g. "AT&D0".
-
- ____________________
-
-
- A-8. Please specify the dial command for your modem (usually "ATD").
-
- ____________________
-
-
- B-1. In which country do you live ?
-
- _______________________________
-
-
- B-2. What is the international dial prefix of your country, e.g.
- "+1" for USA, "+49" for Germany ?
-
- +______
-
-
- B-3. Please mark the default dial method in your country, i.e. one that
- works from as many different locations and with as many different
- telephone companies as possible.
-
- (_) tone dialing (as for example in USA)
-
- (_) pulse dialing (as for example in Germany)
-
-
- C-1. Please give me some information about how your phone company
- charges you for phone calls (NOT including monthly base fees,
- special calling features etc., only the billing method for
- each phone call or time unit). I don't need any numbers or
- figures, just information about the principles how billing
- works with your phone company.
-
- Please mark everything that applies. If there is anything else
- special about the billing system, please explain it below.
-
- (_) Some calls are free (no charge at all), without time limit.
-
- (_) Some calls have a "flat" (per-call) fee without time limit.
-
- (_) Some calls have a "per-time unit" fee.
-
- (_) For some calls the fee for the first time unit is higher
- than the fee for all further time units.
-
- (_) For some calls the first time unit is shorter than all
- further time units.
-
- (_) The fee per call, fee per time unit or length of a time unit
- may differ
-
- (_) depending on local time of day (peek vs. off-peek rates).
-
- (_) depending on the weekday (e.g. weekend rates).
-
- (_) on certain days of the year, e.g. national holidays.
-
- (_) Anything else not covered above:
